Nairobi's economy is the largest in East Africa and generates approximately 25 to 30 percent of Kenya's total GDP. The city is the regional center for financial services, telecommunications, manufacturing, retail, and international development organizations.

Financial Services

The financial services sector is the dominant driver of Nairobi's economy. The Nairobi Stock Exchange (now the Nairobi Securities Exchange) is the primary capital market for East Africa. Kenya's major commercial banks, insurance companies, investment firms, and pension funds maintain headquarters in Nairobi's CBD. The banking sector is highly concentrated, with five banks controlling the majority of assets.

Telecommunications

Kenya's telecommunications sector is centered in Nairobi. Safaricom, Airtel Kenya, and Equity Bank have their headquarters here. Safaricom is the region's largest mobile operator and one of Kenya's most valuable companies.

UN Agencies and NGOs

Nairobi hosts the headquarters of the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) and the United Nations Human Settlements Programme (UN-Habitat), making it the only African city to host two major UN agency headquarters. Additionally, Nairobi is home to hundreds of international NGOs, creating a substantial development and humanitarian sector employment base.

Manufacturing

The Athi River Industrial Area, located south of the city, is Kenya's primary manufacturing and processing center. This area produces cement, chemicals, textiles, food processing, and light manufactures. Manufacturing contributes an estimated 10 to 15 percent of Nairobi's GDP.

Retail and Trade

Nairobi dominates East Africa's retail sector. Shopping malls, department stores, wholesale markets, and trader networks serve not only the city but the entire region. The city's role as a distribution hub for imports and exports generates substantial commercial activity.

Tech and Innovation

The emerging technology sector, dubbed "Silicon Savannah," contributes a growing share of economic activity. Tech startups, software development, mobile innovation, and digital services are increasingly important.
