Nairobi faces significant crime challenges, ranging from street-level theft and mugging to organized crime, carjacking, and gang violence. Crime is a major concern for residents and a deterrent to investment and tourism.

Street Crime

Street crime includes mugging, theft, pickpocketing, and robbery. These crimes occur across the city but are particularly prevalent in certain areas (poor neighborhoods, entertainment districts, and areas with heavy foot traffic). Victims often lose money, phones, and valuables to street criminals.

Carjacking

Vehicle theft and carjacking have been problems in Nairobi, with organized gangs targeting private vehicles. Security improvements and vehicle tracking systems have reduced carjacking somewhat, but the threat remains.

Gang Activity

Nairobi has numerous criminal gangs, some with ethnic or neighborhood-based identities. The Gaza gang, traditionally a Somali-based criminal organization, has been involved in robbery, mugging, and drug trafficking. The Mungiki, a Kikuyu-based group, has been involved in extortion and violence. Gang violence occasionally erupts into turf wars and public violence.

Drug Trafficking

Drug trafficking and use is a problem in Nairobi, particularly in informal settlements and entertainment districts. Heroin, cocaine, and methamphetamine are traded, often fueling addiction and related crime.

Sexual Violence

Sexual violence, including rape and sexual assault, is endemic in Nairobi, particularly in informal settlements where policing is weak. Victim reporting is low due to shame and lack of faith in justice.

Organized Crime

Organized crime networks engage in money laundering, corruption, smuggling, and economic crimes. These criminal networks often involve police or government officials, making prosecution difficult.

Security Industry Response

The private security industry has grown substantially in response to crime, with wealthier residents and businesses employing guards, electronic security systems, and fortified facilities. This has created a "fortress" mentality in some neighborhoods.

Police and Justice Challenges

The Kenya Police Service faces resource constraints, corruption allegations, and capacity challenges in crime investigation and prosecution. The justice system is slow and sometimes unreliable, reducing the deterrent effect of law enforcement.
