Nairobi is Kenya's capital city and the headquarters of the Nairobi City County, one of Kenya's 47 counties under the 2010 devolved governance system. The county government is responsible for local administration, service delivery, and urban planning.

Governance Structure

The Nairobi City County Government consists of an elected governor, a deputy governor, and a county assembly of elected representatives. The governor serves as chief executive of the county government, while the county assembly functions as the legislative body.

Governors

Several governors have served Nairobi since devolution in 2013. Evans Kidero (2013-2017) served as the first governor, implementing some infrastructure projects but facing corruption allegations. Mike Sonko (2017-2020) was a flamboyant and controversial governor, also facing corruption allegations and multiple arrests. Anne Kananu served briefly (2020-2022) as acting governor. Johnson Sakaja (2022-present) has focused on city cleaning and informal settlement upgrading, though governance challenges persist.

Service Delivery Challenges

The county government faces persistent challenges in service delivery, including inadequate water supply, poor solid waste management, inadequate healthcare facilities, and limited resources for infrastructure maintenance. Revenue collection is limited, and corruption remains endemic.

Urban Planning and Development

The county government is responsible for urban planning and zoning, but faces pressure from informal settlements, squatter populations, and powerful commercial interests. Planning enforcement is inconsistent and sometimes ineffective.

Political Dynamics

Nairobi politics are highly competitive, with multiple political parties and interests competing for power. Elections are often contentious, and the city's size makes it a crucial political battleground in national elections.

Informal Settlement Upgrading

Recent county administrations have attempted upgrading informal settlements, including water provision, sanitation improvements, and housing initiatives. These efforts face resource constraints and limited effectiveness.
