Westlands and Parklands are two adjacent neighborhoods in northwestern Nairobi that historically housed and continue to house the city's Asian (Indian, Pakistani, and Gujarati) commercial and residential populations.

Westlands: Commercial Hub

Westlands developed in the mid-20th century as the primary commercial and business district for Nairobi's Asian merchants and entrepreneurs. The neighborhood features high-rise office towers, wholesale markets, retail centers, and service industries. Westlands Road became the main commercial artery, lined with shops, restaurants, banks, and professional offices.

The commercial success of Westlands was built on the accumulated capital and trading networks of Indian merchants who had migrated to Kenya during and after the colonial period. These merchants controlled import-export businesses, wholesale distribution, real estate development, and financial services.

Parklands: Residential Character

Parklands, historically a more residential area, was home to middle-class and affluent Asian families. The neighborhood featured larger residential compounds, private schools, and community centers. Parklands also had a historically significant Jewish community that contributed to its cultural diversity.

Demographic Change

After independence in 1964, many Asian Kenyans chose to remain (despite initial uncertainty), and Westlands and Parklands remained firmly Asian-dominated neighborhoods. However, since the 1990s, the demographic composition has shifted. Young affluent Africans, expatriates, and international firms have moved into both neighborhoods. Today, while the Asian presence remains significant, these areas are increasingly cosmopolitan.

Modern Westlands

Modern Westlands has become one of Nairobi's wealthiest and most modern neighborhoods, home to multinational corporations, embassies, and upscale restaurants and nightlife. Real estate prices have skyrocketed, making it less affordable for middle-class families.
