Kiambu's economy is built on agricultural production (coffee, tea, horticulture, dairy), manufacturing (textiles, food processing, pharmaceuticals), and increasingly, real estate and services. The county is one of Kenya's richest in terms of per capita income and asset ownership, driven by high-value agricultural exports and industrial production.
Coffee farming is particularly important in Limuru and surrounding high-altitude areas, where volcanic soils and cool temperatures produce premium AA-grade coffee. Kiambu coffee is internationally recognized and commands high prices. Tea estates in Limuru complement coffee production. Horticulture (vegetables, cut flowers) has expanded significantly, providing income for smallholder and commercial farmers. Dairy farming supports milk production for urban markets, with numerous small producers supplying processing facilities.
Manufacturing in Thika and other centers includes textile mills (Rivatex), food processing, pharmaceutical production, and metal fabrication. The Del Monte pineapple operation in Thika is one of Kenya's largest agro-industrial operations, producing and canning fruit for export. Small manufacturing enterprises proliferate throughout the county. The real estate boom has created opportunities in property development, construction, and services. Services, wholesale trade, and retail commerce have expanded to support the growing urban and suburban population.
