Alliance High School in Kikuyu town is Kenya's most elite secondary school and arguably the most important educational institution in shaping Kenya's post-independence leadership. Founded in 1926 by the Alliance of Protestant Missions (combining Church of Scotland, Church of England, Methodist, and Presbyterian churches), Alliance was established to educate the sons of African leaders and wealthy families in the British colonial tradition.
The school's curriculum emphasized English language, classical education, and Christian values, creating a distinctive institutional culture distinct from government schools. Admission to Alliance became intensely competitive and extremely prestigious. An Alliance education opened doors to Kenya's finest universities (initially abroad, later domestically) and to networks of power and influence that extended throughout Kenya's professional and political classes.
Alliance has educated numerous Kenyan presidents, prime ministers, cabinet ministers, bishops, business leaders, and intellectuals. The school's alumni network functions as one of Kenya's most important elite social institutions, with old boys maintaining lifelong connections and supporting each other's careers. The school has remained academically excellent, consistently placing students in top universities. However, the school's exclusivity and elite character have drawn criticism for perpetuating class inequality and elite capture in Kenya, as wealthy families are able to pay fees that many Kenyans cannot afford.
