Kiambu County was in the heart of Kenya's White Highlands, the colonial system of land alienation that reserved the most fertile, high-altitude land exclusively for European settler farmers. Kikuyu heartland was seen by colonial administrators as the most suitable location for European agriculture, creating intense competition for control of Kiambu's land.
During the colonial period (1895-1963), the British colonial government expropriated vast tracts of Kikuyu land, displacing Kikuyu farmers and limiting their access to their ancestral territory. Some Kikuyu were offered employment as laborers on European farms, becoming "squatters" with limited rights. The colonial state created a racial hierarchy where European land rights were absolute and African land rights were contingent and restricted. Large European farms cultivated coffee, tea, and other high-value crops.
Land dispossession created profound Kikuyu grievances that fueled the Mau Mau uprising. Kikuyu who had lost land, squatters exploited by European employers, and land-poor young men joined the movement seeking to recover stolen ancestral land. The uprising's violence was partly motivated by the simple, powerful demand: give back the land. After independence, land redistribution addressed some grievances, selling white farms to wealthy Kikuyu buyers, though many dispossessed smallholders received limited benefits. Land issues remain contested and emotional in Kiambu into the 21st century.
