Limuru is a highland town in Kiambu County at approximately 2,200 meters elevation, known for its tea estates and cool climate. The town is surrounded by large tea plantations that have made Limuru one of Kenya's tea-producing heartlands. The plantations produce high-quality tea for both domestic consumption and export, with numerous tea factories processing leaves into finished product.

Beyond tea, Limuru hosts other tea-related industries including tea trading, grading, and packaging facilities. The Bata shoe factory, established in the colonial period, was historically a major employer, though manufacturing in Kenya has faced challenges in recent decades. Limuru's elevation creates a cool climate suitable for tea production but also makes the area prone to frost and hail, which can damage crops. The town serves as a market and administrative center for the surrounding rural population.

The tea industry in Limuru has generated significant wealth for large estate owners and has provided employment for thousands of workers. However, smallholder tea farmers (who constitute the majority of producers) often earn minimal income from tea, facing challenges of high production costs, volatile prices, and strong bargaining power from processing companies. Tea cooperatives have been important in aggregating smallholder production and providing services, though cooperative governance has often been challenged by political interference and corruption. Tourism related to tea estates and scenic tea garden views has emerged as a secondary economic activity.
