This business experience complemented Ruto's own business background and reinforced the Kenya Kwanza campaign's emphasis on economic entrepreneurship and business-friendly governance. Gachagua's business credibility suggested that a Ruto-Gachagua government would prioritize private sector development and would be accessible to business interests.
Politically, Gachagua had established himself as a significant political operator in Mt. Kenya region, controlling voting constituencies through local networks and patronage relationships. His political influence in the region meant that his presence on the Kenya Kwanza ticket provided organizational capacity and voter mobilization ability in the crucial Central Kenya constituencies where Ruto needed to penetrate Kikuyu support. Gachagua's standing in Mt. Kenya made him a credible voice for regional interests within a government that would break Kikuyu presidential dominance.
The Gachagua selection also signaled that a Ruto government would maintain political balance through representation of multiple regional constituencies. By selecting a Mt. Kenya politician as running mate rather than selecting another Kalenjin politician or a politician from other regions, Ruto was demonstrating commitment to inter-regional representation and to avoiding the appearance of Rift Valley dominance. This balancing strategy reflected an attempt to build coalition support that transcended single-region dominance.
However, Gachagua's selection generated some concern regarding institutional power dynamics. As Vice President, Gachagua would be subordinate to President Ruto but would possess substantial authority over regional governance and implementation of national policies in Mt. Kenya region. The potential for tension between a Mt. Kenya Vice President and a Rift Valley President regarding resource distribution and policy priorities was anticipated by some observers, though the actual working relationship would only be determined through post-election governance experience.
The running mate requirement established under the 2010 Constitution meant that Gachagua would be elected to the Vice President position simultaneously with Ruto's election to the presidency. This joint ticket arrangement meant that voters could not separate their presidential choice from their running mate choice, necessitating that Ruto's selection of Gachagua would be acceptable to the broader coalition supporting Ruto's presidential candidacy. This masculine dominance of the presidency and vice presidency meant that the 2022 election, while represented by Raila's selection of female running mate Martha Karua, continued male-dominated patterns at the highest levels of executive government.
Gachagua's post-election role in the Ruto government proved significant. As Vice President, Gachagua exercised authority over various government functions and served as Ruto's principal deputy. However, the Ruto-Gachagua relationship would demonstrate tensions and divergences of interest characteristic of coalition governments wherein the presidency and vice presidency represent different regional bases.
