The Electoral Commission of Kenya's announcement of Kibaki's victory on December 30, 2007, became the flashpoint for the post-election crisis. ECK Chairman Samuel Kivuitu later admitted that he did not know who had actually won the election and that the results announcement had been politically determined rather than mathematically verified. The ECK's lack of independence, its perceived bias toward Kibaki, and the irregularities documented by international observers all called its credibility into question. The ECK's failure to credibly administer the election and announce transparent results triggered the violence that followed.
