KANU's collapse in the 2002 election represented one of the most dramatic party implosions in recent African history. From nearly 60 percent support in 1997, KANU fell to 31 percent in 2002. The party's parliamentary representation collapsed from supermajority to a small opposition caucus. Dozens of KANU MPs and officials "crossed the floor" in the weeks before the election, switching their allegiances to NARC when it became clear that NARC would likely form the government. This phenomenon of ambitious politicians defecting from a losing party to a winning coalition demonstrated how patronage networks could be disrupted when control of state power shifted.
The collapse reflected multiple factors: the end of Moi's presidency removing the patron at the center of KANU networks, the NARC coalition's credible prospect of victory attracting defections, generational change creating younger politicians less attached to Moi's historical dominance, and the changed international context withdrawing support from KANU. The party that had ruled Kenya since independence was suddenly relegated to opposition status. Many KANU politicians who had built careers within the party faced the choice of remaining loyal to a losing cause or jumping to a winning coalition. Most chose the latter.
