Trans-Nzoia County has one of Kenya's most complex and diverse ethnic compositions. Kalenjin (a Kalenjin sub-group) are the indigenous population, historically concentrated in the Mount Elgon region. Bukusu Luhya communities settled in parts of the county and maintain strong cultural presence. Kikuyu settlers arrived during and after the colonial period and developed significant landholdings. Luo communities, particularly from Kisumu and Siaya regions, migrated to the county for agricultural opportunities. Other groups including Marakwet, Samburu, and Somali traders are also present.

Historical Settlement Patterns

The colonial period (1895-1963) established European settler farms in the White Highlands, including parts of Trans-Nzoia. Post-independence redistribution of expropriated European lands created opportunities for various Kenyan communities to settle. Kikuyu communities received substantial allocations under land settlement schemes, leading to significant Kikuyu presence in some zones. The Sabaot resisted some settlement patterns, particularly in Mount Elgon and surrounding areas. Political allocation of land combined with economic migration created the county's current ethnic geography.

Social and Political Dynamics

Ethnic diversity has generated both economic complementarity and periodic tensions. Mixed ethnic farming communities share agricultural knowledge and labor. Market interactions between pastoral and agricultural communities have created economic interdependence. Political representation at county and national levels reflects the ethnic composition, with competition for elected offices along ethnic lines. Inter-ethnic land disputes have occurred, particularly involving Mount Elgon territory. Community initiatives focus on cross-ethnic dialogue and conflict prevention. Schools and churches bring diverse ethnic groups into regular interaction.
