Kalenjin Land Defence Force (SLDF) was an armed insurgent group that operated primarily in Mount Elgon area spanning Trans-Nzoia and Elgeyo-Marakwet counties (2006-2008). The SLDF emerged from Sabaot community grievances over land access, forest control, and what they viewed as illegal settlement by non-Sabaot groups on ancestral Sabaot territory. The conflict was particularly bitter because it involved violence between Sabaot sub-groups (Soy and Mosop communities), creating internal community fragmentation. The insurgency was motivated by competition for Mount Elgon forest resources and land ownership disputes that traced back to colonial allocation and post-independence redistribution patterns.

Conflict Violence and Casualties

The SLDF insurgency generated significant violence, with armed operations against settlers and government forces. Death toll estimates range from 300 to 1,000 individuals, with significant variation in different sources. Hundreds of families were displaced, fleeing Mount Elgon areas to surrounding regions or urban centers. Kidnappings and forced recruitment occurred as the SLDF compelled community participation. Property destruction included burned homes, slaughtered livestock, and destroyed agricultural plots. Sexual violence against women was documented during the conflict. Internally displaced persons faced challenges accessing food, shelter, and basic services. The violence created lasting trauma and psychological impacts in affected communities.

Government Response and Conflict Resolution

Government security forces (police and military) conducted operations against the SLDF, involving armed conflict in Mount Elgon region. Human rights organizations documented extrajudicial killings and excessive force by security forces. Forced disarmament operations required community members to surrender weapons. Government restrictions on movement in conflict areas limited livelihood activities. Subsequent peace and reconciliation efforts have been limited, with formal truth commissions not fully implemented. Community dialogue initiatives attempt to rebuild relationships between previously conflicting groups. Land adjudication processes aim to resolve ownership disputes that generated the original conflict. Surviving victims have received limited compensation or formal recognition of their suffering.
