Kogelo is a small village in Siaya County, Kenya, best known as the ancestral home of Barack Hussein Obama Sr. and the paternal family of former US President Barack Hussein Obama II. The village is located in Nyang'oma location and had a population of approximately 17,294 as of 2008.

The village became internationally known following Barack Obama II's election to the US presidency in 2008.

Sarah Hussein Onyango Obama

Sarah Hussein Onyango Obama, the paternal grandmother of President Barack Obama, lived in Kogelo for much of her life. She became widely known internationally as "Mama Sarah" and lived to the age of 99, dying in 2021. She maintained residence in Kogelo and became a symbol of the village's connection to the global Obama family.

Tourism and Development

The international attention generated by the Obama presidency brought visitors to Kogelo seeking to visit the ancestral home. This tourism interest catalyzed some development in the village, including improved road access and the construction of a small museum.
