Barack Hussein Obama Sr. (1936-1982) was born in the Rachuonyo District on the shores of Lake Victoria, but was raised in Nyang'oma Kogelo village in Siaya County. He became an internationally known economist, nationalist, and prominent figure in Kenya's post-independence politics. As the biological father of Barack Hussein Obama II (44th President of the United States), his connection to Siaya has given the county global recognition.
Early Life and Education
Obama Sr. was born into a Luo family of modest means and was educated in Kenya before winning a scholarship to study in the United States. He attended Harvard University in the late 1950s and early 1960s, where he earned degrees in economics and political science. During his time in America, he married Ann Dunham, a white American woman from Kansas, with whom he had Barack Hussein Obama II (born 1961).
Return to Kenya and Political Career
After completing his education, Obama Sr. returned to Kenya during the post-independence period. He worked in the newly independent Kenyan government as an economist and held positions including work with the International Labour Organization and the Treasury. He was recognized as an intellectual voice on African development issues.
Connection to Kogelo
Although born in Rachuonyo, Obama Sr.'s family connections to Kogelo Village in Siaya District made the village his ancestral home. His extended family maintained residence in Kogelo, and the village has become synonymous with the Obama family legacy in Kenya.
Legacy
Obama Sr. died in a car accident in Nairobi in 1982, shortly after the election of his son Barack to the Kenyan parliament. His life and work are commemorated in Siaya, and his legacy has contributed to international attention focused on the county.
