Meru County sits on the northeastern slopes of Mount Kenya and is home to approximately 1.5 million people. The county is named after the Meru people, who form the dominant ethnic community. Meru Town serves as the county headquarters and functions as a vital agricultural service center for the region.

The county encompasses diverse landscapes, ranging from 300 meters above sea level in the lowlands to 5,199 meters at Mount Kenya's peak. This elevation range creates distinct ecological zones that support varied agricultural activities. The Nyambene Hills on the western slopes are the epicenter of Kenya's miraa (khat) production.

Economic Pillars

Meru County's economy rests on several agricultural commodities. Miraa production dominates in the Nyambene Hills and is exported to Somalia and the Somali diaspora globally. High-altitude coffee grows on the mountain slopes and competes with the finest Arabica from Kenya's other highland regions. Tea cultivation thrives in the mid-altitude zones. Honey production has made Meru Kenya's leading honey-producing county, with brands like Forest Honey gaining recognition. Macadamia nuts, French beans, and cattle dairy farming supplement the agricultural portfolio.
