Meru County occupies the northeastern and eastern slopes of Mount Kenya, extending from tropical lowlands at approximately 300 meters above sea level to the alpine zone at 5,199 meters. This dramatic elevation range of nearly 5,000 meters creates distinct climatic and ecological zones that shape settlement patterns, agriculture, and livelihoods across the county.
Topography and Elevation Zones
The county's terrain divides into several vertical zones. The lowland zone below 1,200 meters includes the arid and semi-arid regions toward Isiolo and the eastern plains. The mid-altitude zone (1,200 to 2,400 meters) encompasses the Nyambene Hills and the main agricultural belt where most of the county's population lives. The highland zone (2,400 to 4,000 meters) includes the montane forest and moorland. The alpine zone above 4,000 meters covers Mount Kenya's glaciated peaks and is protected within national parks and forest reserves.
Rainfall Gradient
Rainfall varies dramatically with elevation and aspect. The windward (western and southwestern) slopes of Mount Kenya receive moisture-laden winds from the Indian Ocean, creating a strong orographic effect. Annual rainfall in the Nyambene Hills reaches 1,500 to 2,000 millimeters. The leeward (eastern) slopes are drier, receiving only 500 to 800 millimeters annually. The lowest elevations in the east experience semi-arid conditions with highly variable rainfall.
Forest Zones
The Mount Kenya forest reserve covers portions of the county's upper slopes. The forest transitions from dense montane forest at lower elevations to bamboo forest at mid-elevations, then to moorland and Alpine vegetation above 4,000 meters. This forest cover plays a critical role in water conservation and biodiversity protection.
Water Resources
Mount Kenya acts as a massive water tower for the region. Numerous rivers originate from the mountain, including tributaries that feed into the larger Ewaso Nyiro River system. These permanent water sources support agriculture and pastoral activities across the county.
