Traditional pastoral lifestyles offer declining opportunities as herd sizes diminish, land access restricts, and pastoral income becomes less reliable. Youth increasingly seek wage employment or urban-based livelihoods rather than inheriting pastoral occupations. However, formal employment remains scarce.
Education provides partial opportunity but not employment certainty. Secondary school graduates and tertiary-educated youth often must migrate to Nairobi or other urban centres seeking employment. Migration networks connect young Marsabit people to urban job opportunities.
Informal economy activities including petty trading, transport operations, and small retail provide some income. Youth entrepreneurship faces barriers including limited capital, credit access, and business experience.
Youth herding continues, combining pastoral income with other activities. Some youth engage in environmental degradation through excessive wood and charcoal harvesting, driven by limited economic opportunities. This activity generates income but creates environmental damage.
Conflict involvement represents a concerning risk. Youth with limited opportunities sometimes participate in inter-communal raids and livestock rustling, gaining income and status through these activities.
Development programmes targeting youth skills training, entrepreneurship support, and employment generation operate with mixed results due to funding constraints and programme design challenges. Government and NGO initiatives attempt to provide pathways out of unemployment.
The Lake Turkana Wind Power project creates some employment opportunities for skilled and unskilled workers, though benefits distribution remains contested.
Social services addressing youth mental health and substance abuse remain underdeveloped.
