Terracing in Machakos County represents a sophisticated soil conservation technology that transformed the landscape during the late twentieth century. Bench terraces, constructed by cutting horizontal platforms into hillsides, capture rainfall runoff and allow water and soil to accumulate rather than eroding downslope. This technique addresses the fundamental challenge of farming on sloped terrain in semi-arid environments.

The adoption of terracing in Machakos accelerated during the 1980s and 1990s in response to visible environmental degradation and declining agricultural yields. Farmers constructed terraces manually, an extraordinarily labour-intensive undertaking. Women performed much of this labour, often working on hillside projects during seasons when agricultural work was minimal. The prevalence of female labour in terracing reflected both the agricultural division of labour in Kamba society and women's particular interest in food security.

Terracing required not only manual labour but also knowledge about slope gradients, water infiltration, and soil properties. Farmers combined this knowledge with information from agricultural extension workers and NGO programmes. Government incentive schemes sometimes provided tools or materials to encourage terrace construction, though most of the investment came from farmers themselves.

The terrace technology proved effective in reducing soil erosion and increasing water availability for crops. By holding water and reducing runoff velocity, terraces increased rainfall infiltration and improved soil moisture during dry seasons. Over time, terraced hillsides accumulated nutrient-rich soil and supported productive vegetation, including both crops and trees.

The widespread adoption of terracing represents a major shift in Machakos land use patterns and demonstrates the capacity of farming communities to undertake large-scale landscape modifications in response to environmental challenges.
