Joy Adamson (1910,1980) was a conservationist and author best known for her book "Born Free" (1960), which documented her work raising the lioness Elsa at Shaba National Reserve in Isiolo County. Adamson's work made her internationally famous and established her as a pioneer in wildlife conservation.

Born in Austria as Friederike Victoria Gessner, Adamson moved to Kenya in the 1930s and married George Adamson, a British game warden. The couple worked together on wildlife conservation projects, establishing a reputation for innovative approaches to animal rehabilitation and release.

At Shaba Reserve, Adamson rehabilitated orphaned animals, most famously Elsa the lioness. Elsa had been raised in captivity and faced execution due to wildlife culling policies. Adamson's intervention allowed Elsa to be rehabilitated and released into the wild, where she survived and successfully raised offspring. This demonstrated that captive-raised animals could adapt to life in the wild under proper rehabilitation.

"Born Free" describes Adamson's work with Elsa and became an international bestseller. A 1966 film based on the book further elevated Adamson's fame. The book's success generated significant funding and international support for wildlife conservation.

Adamson's conservation philosophy emphasised working with local communities and understanding animal behaviour. She advocated for conservation approaches that recognised animals' agency and the possibility of rehabilitation.

On January 3, 1980, Adamson was murdered at her compound in Shaba National Reserve. A poacher whom she had previously dismissed shot and killed her during an argument. Her death shocked the international conservation community and raised questions about security and working in remote locations.
