Climate change poses a critical challenge to Isiolo County. Scientific evidence indicates that Isiolo's already arid and semi-arid environment is becoming progressively more arid, with precipitation patterns becoming more erratic and droughts more frequent and severe.

Temperature observations show consistent warming across the region. Maximum and minimum temperatures have increased over recent decades. Higher temperatures intensify evaporation, compounding the effects of reduced rainfall.

Rainfall variability and reduction are projected to continue. Models suggest precipitation may decline 10-20 percent by 2050, with increasing month-to-month and year-to-year unpredictability. These changes threaten pastoral production systems that depend on predictable wet seasons.

Drought impacts on pastoral livelihoods are substantial. Extended droughts reduce pasture availability, livestock productivity declines, animals die, and pastoralists lose wealth. Recent droughts (2010,2011 and 2019,2022) caused significant livestock losses and food emergencies.

Water resources face increasing stress. Lower rainfall and higher evaporation reduce river flows and groundwater recharge. The Ewaso Nyiro River's reliability decreases. Boreholes that depend on groundwater face risks of declining water tables.

Ecosystem degradation results from combination of climate stress and land use pressure. Vegetation productivity declines. Soil erosion increases in some areas. Wildlife habitat degrades.

Adaptation strategies include diversification beyond pastoral production toward irrigated agriculture and non-pastoral income activities. Water harvesting and storage infrastructure help capture and retain rainfall. Improved pastoral management including rotational grazing and fodder production enhance resilience.

Mitigation efforts address climate change at national and global scales, though the region's contribution to global emissions is minimal. Adaptation is the priority for northern Kenya.
