Isiolo town is the county headquarters and the gateway to Kenya's arid north. Located at the junction where the paved A109 highway historically terminated, it evolved into a critical supply and trade hub connecting the central highlands with pastoral northern regions.

The town functions as a major livestock trading centre where northern pastoralists converge with southern merchants. Cattle, camels, and goats flow through Isiolo's markets to urban centres like Nairobi and Mombasa. This role as intermediary makes Isiolo essential to Kenya's pastoral economy.

As a frontier town, Isiolo exhibits the characteristics of rapid growth and cultural blending. Borana, Somali, Samburu, Meru, and Turkana communities interact daily in markets, schools, and administrative spaces. The town's infrastructure, education facilities, and market services reflect both its importance and the challenges of managing diverse communities in a semi-arid region.

The arrival of the LAPSSET Corridor development has intensified construction and speculation in Isiolo, transforming the town's physical and economic landscape since 2015.
