The colonial history of Embu County extends from the late nineteenth century when European explorers and missionaries first encountered the Embu people, through formal establishment of British colonial administration in the early twentieth century, until Kenya's independence in 1964. The Embu region underwent substantial transformations during this seventy-year colonial period including introduction of colonial administrative systems, European settlement in portions of the highlands, expansion of missionary activities, imposition of labor demands on African populations, and ultimately development of nationalist resistance to colonial rule that culminated in the Mau Mau Uprising.

The earliest European contact with Embu areas occurred through explorers and missionaries traveling from coastal Kenya toward the interior during the 1880s and 1890s. European interest in the Mount Kenya region reflected both geographic curiosity about Africa's second-highest mountain and economic interest in the potential for European settlement and agricultural production. Missionaries established stations in Embu areas during the early twentieth century, introducing Christianity and establishing schools that provided education in English and colonial ideology alongside missionary religious instruction. These early institutions created the foundation for Christian conversion and Western-style education that became increasingly central to Embu society over subsequent decades.

Formal British colonial administration was established in Embu County in the early twentieth century following Britain's consolidation of control over Kenya through military and political domination. The colonial administration imposed direct rule through colonial district officers and appointed chiefs who supervised local administration and tax collection. The colonial state introduced cash taxation requiring Africans to earn money through wage labor or crop sales to pay taxes, fundamentally altering economic relationships and forcing African communities into engagement with colonial markets. The colonial administration also introduced laws regulating African agricultural production, land use, and labor, creating the legal infrastructure through which colonial economic interests could be pursued.

Land policies represented one of the most consequential aspects of colonial administration in Embu County. The colonial government established a Land Office that surveyed and registered European-owned land, converting Embu territory into parcels held under freehold title by European settlers or the colonial government. Large areas of Embu, particularly the best-watered and highest-potential agricultural zones on Mount Kenya's slopes, were allocated to European settlers for establishment of coffee plantations, wheat farms, and livestock ranches. These land allocations systematically excluded Africans from ownership of the prime agricultural lands, compressing African communities into reserves of smaller size and lower potential. The colonial land system introduced concepts of permanent individual land ownership and transferable title, replacing Embu's customary systems of communal and clan-based land stewardship.

Coffee production became the primary economic focus of European settlement in Embu areas. European planters established coffee estates on the mid-altitude slopes of Mount Kenya, where the climate and soils proved ideal for coffee cultivation. These estates required substantial labor forces, which the colonial administration secured through a combination of coercion and economic necessity. Young Embu men were either forced or economically compelled to work as wage laborers on European estates, receiving minimal wages for demanding physical labor. The estates' concentration of land and labor resources created significant wealth for European planters while providing Embu workers with minimal income. Coffee was processed and exported through colonial trading networks, generating profits that flowed primarily to British interests rather than enriching local Embu communities.

The colonial state also promoted indigenous African coffee production among Embu smallholders during the early twentieth century, though with significant restrictions and control mechanisms. The government licensed only those Africans it deemed responsible to grow coffee, withheld licenses from politically troublesome individuals, and restricted African coffee marketing to government-approved channels. Despite these restrictions, some Embu farmers began growing coffee on their remaining lands, developing the foundation for the smallholder coffee production system that would expand after independence.

Agricultural labor demands extended beyond European estates. The colonial state also conscripted Embu men for work on colonial infrastructure projects including road construction and maintenance, railway development, and public building construction. These labor demands disrupted agricultural production, diverted productive male labor from family farms, and often involved harsh working conditions and poor compensation. World War II intensified these demands, with the colonial government conscripting Embu men into military service or forced labor in support of the war effort.

Missionary influence in Embu expanded substantially during the colonial period. Christian missionary societies, primarily the Anglican Church and other Protestant denominations, established mission stations that provided medical care, education, and Christian instruction. These missions created some of the first formal schools in Embu, providing education to Embu children in English language and colonial academic subjects. Mission medical facilities provided health services unavailable through traditional practitioners. Christian conversion proceeded unevenly across Embu, with some communities embracing Christianity while others maintained pre-colonial religious practices. The missions' emphasis on Western education positioned Christian converts for advantages in the colonial system, contributing to the prominence of Christian Embu individuals in colonial administration and business.

The development of colonial taxation created persistent economic pressures on Embu communities. The head tax required every adult male to pay annual taxes to the colonial government, initially collected in cash but later sometimes accepted in crop production or labor service. Tax revenues funded colonial administration and created incentives for Africans to enter wage labor or cash crop production to earn tax payments. The colonial government used tax collection as a mechanism of social control, with tax resistance met with penalties and forced sale of cattle or crops.

By the 1940s, colonial rule in Embu had created significant grievances including land dispossession, labor exploitation, racial discrimination, and limited political voice for African communities. These grievances provided the foundation for the emergence of nationalist political organizations seeking to mobilize African interests against colonial rule. The Colonial Office's prohibition on African political organizations prior to World War II was followed by increasing African political activism in the post-war period. Embu became a center of nationalist organizational activity, with educated Embu individuals participating in the formation of Kenya African Union and other nationalist political movements.
