Ol Pejeta Conservancy in Laikipia is home to the last two northern white rhinos on earth, both female. The species is functionally extinct. Scientists are attempting IVF using frozen sperm, but the northern white rhino will likely disappear. Kenya's southern white rhino population, reintroduced from South Africa, is recovering. The contrast is stark: one subspecies thriving through translocation, the other dying despite every intervention. Rhinos are the conservation movement's most visible failure and fragile success.
