D.O. Misiani sang in Dholuo about land, corruption, and the men who stole from the poor. The Moi government arrested him in 1979, banned his records, and tried to make him irrelevant. He kept recording. His cassettes sold in the thousands, copied and passed hand to hand because the official music stores wouldn't stock them. He died in a car accident in 2006, and 100,000 people came to his funeral. The government that tried to erase him sent a representative to pay respects.
