The nyatiti is an eight-stringed lyre the Luo have played for centuries, usually by men during rituals or storytelling. Ayub Ogada learned it as a child in Siaya, took it to Nairobi, then to Europe, and eventually onto soundtracks and world music festivals. He never abandoned the instrument's ceremonial roots, but he made it something a global audience could recognize. Today, young Luo musicians are picking up the nyatiti again, some because of him, others in spite of what he represented. The instrument is still here. The debate about what it means is ongoing.
