In January 2008, after the disputed presidential election, violence came to Kikuyu heartland. Murang'a, Kiambu, and Banana Hill saw machete attacks, arson, and revenge killings. Kikuyu voters had backed Kibaki. Luo and Kalenjin communities in the Rift Valley had backed Raila. When Kibaki was declared winner under suspicious circumstances, retaliatory violence spread. Kikuyu were killed in Eldoret, Naivasha, and Nakuru. Kikuyu in Central Kenya retaliated. By the time the bloodshed stopped, over 1,300 people were dead. The violence in Kikuyu areas is less remembered than the Rift Valley massacres, but it happened. This trail documents it.
