On October 25, 1969, Kenyatta visited Kisumu to open a hospital. Oginga Odinga's supporters gathered to greet their leader, and when Kenyatta's motorcade arrived, they chanted for Jaramogi. Kenyatta's security forces opened fire. The official count was 11 dead. Witnesses say it was many more. The massacre confirmed what Luo Kenya already knew: they were not safe, not welcome, not forgiven for their opposition. Kisumu was placed under emergency rule. The wound never healed.
