Detention without trial has been a constant in Kenyan politics. Kenyatta detained Oginga Odinga and JM Kariuki before he was killed. Moi detained everyone: students, lawyers, journalists, MPs. Koigi wa Wamwere was detained three times. Raila Odinga twice. The legal framework was inherited from the British Emergency, refined under Nyayo, and only truly dismantled with the 2010 constitution. This trail follows the men and women who were held without charge, tortured in basements, and emerged to reshape Kenyan politics. Detention was meant to silence. It rarely did.
