Amboseli National Park, at the foot of Kilimanjaro, is one of Kenya's most researched wildlife areas. Cynthia Moss's elephant studies there have run for over 50 years, producing foundational knowledge of elephant behavior and family structure. But Amboseli is also contested Maasai land. The park was created in 1974, restricting Maasai access to critical dry-season pasture. Revenue-sharing agreements and conservancy partnerships have eased tensions, but the fundamental question remains: whose land is this, and who decides how it is used?
