Sauti Sol started as a high school acapella group in 2005. By 2015, they were filling stadiums across East Africa. By 2020, they had a Grammy nomination and collaborations with artists from Nigeria, South Africa, and the United States. They sang in Swahili and Sheng, blended Kenyan guitar styles with Afrobeat and R&B, and built a pan-African audience without leaving Nairobi. Their success wasn't accidental. It was the result of a deliberate strategy to make Kenyan music matter beyond Kenya's borders.
