The Church of Scotland Mission arrived in Kikuyu land in 1898 and changed everything. They built schools, translated the Bible, and created a new class of mission-educated Kikuyu. The church opposed female circumcision, triggering a split that led to independent schools. But the Presbyterians also produced Kenya's future elite. Kenyatta, Mboya, and Kibaki were all educated in mission schools. The Presbyterian Church of East Africa remains the dominant church in Central Kenya. Its influence is not just spiritual. It is educational, economic, and political. Understanding Kikuyu power requires understanding the role of the church.
