Daniel arap Moi's government banned songs, jailed musicians, and forced others into exile. D.O. Misiani was arrested. Fundi Konde fled to Tanzania. Joseph Kamaru's songs were pulled from radio. But other musicians found ways around the censors. They sang in metaphor, used traditional languages the censors didn't speak, or recorded in neighboring countries and smuggled the cassettes back. Some collaborated. Others resisted. The archive of Kenyan music from 1978 to 2002 is also an archive of what it took to make art under an authoritarian state.
