Mount Kenya, Kirinyaga, is the Kikuyu's sacred mountain, the home of Ngai, and the second-highest peak in Africa. Its glaciers are disappearing, the victim of climate change that has reduced ice cover by 90 percent since the 1960s. The mountain is a water tower for millions, an ecosystem of stunning complexity, and a UNESCO World Heritage Site. For the Kikuyu, it is also origin, the place where Gikuyu and Mumbi, the first ancestors, were given the land. The mountain is ecology and theology, inseparable.
