The Maasai live in both Kenya and Tanzania, divided by a border imposed by European powers in 1885. The colonial experiences differed. British Kenya was settler-dominated; German and later British Tanganyika less so. Post-independence, Kenyan Maasai faced more aggressive land loss, while Tanzanian Maasai were pressured under ujamaa villagization. Today, Kenyan Maasai are more integrated into the cash economy and tourism, Tanzanian Maasai more isolated. The border is arbitrary, but the consequences are real. Same people, different fates.
