The 2022 election was supposed to be Raila Odinga's coronation. He had the outgoing president's backing, the deep state, and the political establishment. William Ruto had the hustler narrative, UDA rallies, and the anger of millions who felt left behind. The campaign was brutal: wheelbarrows vs. dynasties, bottom-up vs. trickle-down, outsider vs. system. Ruto won by 233,000 votes. The Supreme Court upheld the result. For the first time in Kenyan history, the son of a nobody defeated the sons of founding fathers. Whether the hustler presidency delivers is another question. But 2022 redefined what was possible.
