Dedan Kimathi was the last major Mau Mau leader in the forests when he was captured in October 1956, wounded and exhausted. His trial was brief. He was convicted of unlawful possession of a firearm and sentenced to death. On February 18, 1957, he was hanged at Kamiti Prison. The British buried him in an unmarked grave. Kimathi's body has never been found. In death, he became larger than in life. He is the martyr of the liberation struggle, the uncompromising fighter who never surrendered. His image appears on currency. Statues stand in his honor. But his body is still missing.
