Barack Obama Sr left Kogelo for Harvard via the University of Hawaii, a brilliant economist who advised Kenyatta's government on fiscal policy. He wrote one of the sharpest critiques of Kenya's development model in 1965, challenging the direction the new nation was taking. But his career collapsed under alcoholism, political miscalculation, and personal recklessness. He died in a car accident in 1982, estranged from his American son and diminished in Kenya. That son became president of the United States, bringing Kogelo briefly into global view.
