The Tharaka National Reserve (now considered part of the Meru National Park Tharaka Climate) is a Tharaka-Nithi County Tharaka and Wildlife area in Tharaka-Nithi County. The reserve supports important wildlife populations and has significance for both Tharaka Forest and community livelihoods.
Geographic Location
The Tharaka National Reserve is located in the lower elevations of Tharaka-Nithi County, within the Tharaka territory. The reserve represents a significant portion of protected land in the region.
Wildlife and Biodiversity
The reserve supports populations of wildlife including elephants, buffalo, zebras, antelopes, and predators (lions, leopards). The reserve is important for maintaining wildlife populations and providing habitat for species in the Mount Kenya ecosystem.
Conservation Status
The reserve has undergone various administrative and management changes. Integration with Meru National Park management has affected reserve administration and management priorities. The reserve remains an important conservation area despite challenges.
Community Relationships
Tharaka communities live adjacent to or within the reserve boundaries. The community relationship with the reserve is complex, involving both economic dependence (through wildlife tourism employment) and conflicts (from wildlife damage to crops and livestock).
Human-Wildlife Conflict
Wildlife leaving the reserve damages crops and occasionally threatens people. Elephants in particular cause significant crop damage. Conflict resolution and compensation mechanisms attempt to address these issues.
Tourism and Economy
The reserve supports wildlife tourism, generating employment and economic activity. However, tourism revenues are often limited and distributed unevenly among communities.
Management Challenges
The reserve faces challenges including poaching pressure, habitat degradation, and management capacity constraints. Community engagement in reserve management is important but remains limited.
