Honey has traditionally been important in Tharaka society and economy. Both wild honey collection and managed Tharaka Beekeeping have been sources of food and Tharaka Economic Development for Tharaka communities.

Wild Honey Collection

Traditionally, Tharaka collected wild honey from bee colonies in trees and rock crevices. Honey collection requires skill and knowledge about bee behavior and hive locations. Wild honey is valued for its nutritional and medicinal properties.

Beekeeping Tradition

Managed beekeeping has been practiced by Tharaka, with bee colonies kept in traditional hives or more recently in modern hive designs. Beekeeping provides regular honey production beyond what can be obtained from wild colonies.

Honey Uses

Honey has multiple uses: as food (consumed directly or used as sweetener), as medicinal product (for treating various ailments), and for production of mead (honey-based alcoholic beverage). Honey is valued for its nutritional content.

Economic Importance

Honey sales provide income for beekeepers and honey collectors. Honey is traded in local markets and, increasingly, through formal markets and tourism outlets. Honey products command premium prices.

Hive Management

Contemporary Tharaka beekeepers manage hives to optimize honey production while minimizing risks. Top-bar hives and other modern designs have been adopted alongside traditional hive designs. Beekeeping requires knowledge of management practices.

Challenges and Support

Beekeeping faces challenges including disease pressure on bee colonies, wild bee predation, and knowledge about best practices. Government and NGO support for beekeeping development is increasing, providing training and input support.

Environmental Significance

Beekeeping contributes to pollination of agricultural crops and wild plants. The practice supports important ecological services while producing valuable products.
