Tegla Loroupe, representing Kenya in the 1990s and 2000s, twice held the women's marathon world record and competed at three Olympic Games. She was the first Kenyan woman and among the first African women to achieve international prominence in marathoning. Beyond athletics, Loroupe has become internationally known as a peace ambassador, using her platform to advocate for peace in the Pokot region of Kenya and South Sudan.

Loroupe was born in 1973 in Pokot District in northwestern Kenya. The Pokot are a pastoral community, not historically known for distance running production in the way that Kalenjin or Luo communities are. Loroupe's emergence as a world-class marathoner was therefore atypical. She was among the first women from pastoral communities in Kenya to break through to international athletic prominence.

Her breakthrough came in the early 1990s when she won the New York Marathon in 1994 and the Boston Marathon in 1995. These victories established her as a competitive marathoner at the highest level. In 1998, Loroupe set the women's marathon world record in 2:20:43, lowering the previous world record. This made her the first Kenyan woman to hold the marathon world record and elevated her to international prominence.

Loroupe competed at the 1996 Atlanta Olympics in the marathon, finishing outside the medals but competing at Olympic level. She competed again at the 2000 Sydney Olympics in the marathon, also finishing outside the medals. Despite her world record and major marathon victories, Loroupe did not win an Olympic medal. Like Catherine Ndereba, Loroupe achieved success in major marathons and world records but not Olympic gold medals.

In 2000, Loroupe set the women's marathon world record again, running 2:20:26. This second world record confirmed her capability at the highest level of women's marathoning. However, her world records were subsequently broken by faster times from other marathoners.

Beyond athletics, Loroupe has become known internationally as a peace advocate. Growing up in the Pokot region, which has experienced pastoral conflict and armed violence, Loroupe has dedicated herself to peace-building work. She founded the Tegla Loroupe Peace Foundation, which works to reduce conflict and promote education in pastoral regions of Kenya and South Sudan. Her peace advocacy has gained international recognition, and she has been nominated for the Nobel Peace Prize multiple times.

This combination of athletic achievement and peace activism distinguishes Loroupe from other Kenyan athletes. While athletes like Kipchoge Keino have engaged in philanthropic work, Loroupe's peace activism is particularly focused on conflict prevention and community reconciliation in marginalized pastoral regions.

Loroupe has continued to be active in athletics administration and international sports diplomacy in her post-competitive years. She has held roles with the United Nations and has been recognized by international organizations for her peace work.
