The East African Safari Rally, established in 1953, is one of the world's toughest motor rallying events. Held primarily in Kenya (though routes have occasionally extended into Tanzania and Uganda), the Safari Rally has been contested at World Rally Championship level, making it one of the most prestigious motorsport events in Africa.
The Safari Rally is known for grueling terrain, wildlife encounters, dust storms, and unpredictable conditions that test drivers' and cars' capabilities beyond typical European rallies. The 1970s-1990s were the Safari Rally's golden era as a WRC round, attracting world champion drivers and providing Kenya with international motorsport prominence.
Kenya's Rally tradition demonstrates sporting excellence beyond athletics and contributes to Kenya's international sports identity.
