Kenya 1964 Tokyo Olympics

Kenya won its first Olympic medal at the 1964 Tokyo Olympics: Wilson Kiprugut won bronze in the 800 meters. This breakthrough medal established Kenya as capable of producing medal-worthy athletes and preceded Kenya's subsequent Olympic dominance. Kiprugut's bronze medal represented the beginning of Kenya's modern Olympic distance running era.
