At independence (1964), Samburu communities became citizens of independent Kenya, participating in national political and economic systems. Samburu representation through elected politicians has provided some voice in national governance. Pastoralist interests have competed with national development priorities. Devolution (2013) created county-level governance enabling Samburu-specific policy focus.

Post-Independence Transition

Samburu initially participated in Kenya's independence governance through appointed chiefs and limited elected representation. Post-colonial administration maintained many colonial policies affecting pastoral communities. National integration has been gradual and uneven.

Political Representation

Samburu constituencies have elected parliamentary members to National Assembly. Samburu politicians have advocated pastoral interests within larger political frameworks. Political participation has provided some resource access but with limited comparative influence relative to larger ethnic groups.

Development and Marginalization

Samburu County has received limited development investment compared to other regions. Pastoral focus has limited infrastructure development and service provision. Government development initiatives have sometimes conflicted with pastoral livelihoods.

Devolution and County Governance

The 2010 constitution created Samburu County as a devolved governance unit. County elections (2013, 2017, 2022) have determined county leadership. County governance has enabled greater Samburu-specific policy focus, including pastoral support and drought management.

Economic Integration

National economic integration has proceeded unevenly, with pastoral communities gradually incorporating into cash economy. Livestock markets and dairy marketing have expanded. However, economic vulnerability to price fluctuations affects pastoral livelihoods.
