Following his retirement from the presidency in 2013, Kibaki established the Mwai Kibaki Foundation, a charitable organisation focused on education, health, and development initiatives in Kenya. The foundation reflected Kibaki's desire to continue contributing to Kenya's development after leaving office and to promote causes aligned with his vision of Kenya's progress. The foundation sponsored educational programmes, health initiatives, and community development projects, primarily focused on areas in Central Kenya with particular emphasis on Nyeri District and constituencies with connections to Kibaki.
The Mwai Kibaki Foundation represented a transition for Kibaki from active political leadership to elder statesman and philanthropist. Through the foundation, Kibaki could influence development priorities and direct resources to causes he deemed important without the constraints of holding political office. The foundation also served to preserve and promote Kibaki's legacy as a development-oriented leader committed to social progress.
