Senior Private Hezekiah Ochuka was the leader of the failed August 1, 1982 coup attempt in Kenya. A member of the Kenya Air Force, Ochuka and his fellow conspirators seized control of the Voice of Kenya radio station and announced the overthrow of President Daniel arap Moi's government. He declared himself the new head of state and claimed to represent a People's Redemption Council committed to ending corruption and tribalism. The coup quickly collapsed as the army and General Service Unit remained loyal to Moi and crushed the rebellion within hours. Ochuka fled to Tanzania, where he was arrested and later extradited back to Kenya. He was tried for treason, convicted, and executed by hanging in 1987. Ochuka's motivations remain debated, with some viewing him as a naive idealist and others as a tool of larger political forces opposed to Moi.
