United States military partnerships with Kenya have expanded significantly since the Cold War period, providing training, equipment, and advisory support to Kenya Defence Forces. These partnerships have grown particularly through counter-terrorism cooperation and regional security engagement in the Horn of Africa.
The Combined Joint Task Force-Horn of Africa (CJTF-HOA) based in Djibouti provides United States military advisory and training support to Kenya Defence Forces. The task force conducts training exercises, capacity-building programmes, and operational coordination with Kenyan military personnel engaged in counter-terrorism operations.
United States military assistance has provided equipment including tactical vehicles, communications systems, and weapons platforms. Defence cooperation agreements structure equipment transfers through both military aid grants and concessional sales arrangements.
Training partnerships allow Kenyan military officers to attend United States military institutions including the Joint Military Training Center and various service-specific schools. These training opportunities expose Kenyan officers to United States military doctrine, tactics, and professional development approaches.
Counter-terrorism training emphasises special operations tactics, counter-insurgency methodologies, and advanced weapons systems operation. Training provided by United States special operations forces has developed Kenya Defence Forces counter-terrorism capabilities.
The United States provided initial approval for Kenya Defence Forces to receive 418 million dollars in military equipment in 2017. This equipment package included vehicles, weapons systems, and supporting equipment contributing to military capability enhancement.
United States intelligence sharing regarding al-Shabaab and other terrorist threats has supported Kenya's counter-terrorism operations. Intelligence cooperation and analysis support Kenya Defence Forces targeting of terrorist organisations.
Defence cooperation agreements have been repeatedly renewed and expanded, reflecting the strategic importance of the partnership. Military-to-military relationships between United States and Kenya Defence Forces have deepened through operational experience and institutional relationships.
Joint military exercises including Exercise Cutlass Express provide frameworks for multinational maritime security training. Kenya Navy participation in Cutlass Express provides training and exposure to international maritime security operations.
Defence industrial cooperation includes United States companies providing military equipment maintenance, training, and technical support. These industrial relationships supplement government-to-government defence assistance.
