Community engagement in education through Harambee movements, parent associations, and school boards constitutes important dimension of Kenyan educational governance. Communities contribute labor and resources to school construction, maintenance, and improvement. Parent Teacher Associations (PTAs) participate in school management, fundraising, and policy implementation. However, community participation varies substantially based on community wealth and capacity, with affluent communities exercising greater influence over school governance than poor communities. Formal community participation mechanisms sometimes reinforce rather than reduce inequality.
