Vihiga County's youth face significant challenges including severe land scarcity, limited formal employment opportunities, and constrained economic prospects. Youth unemployment is widespread despite high education levels. Youth comprise a substantial proportion of Vihiga's population given high fertility rates, intensifying demand for education, employment, and services. Out-migration is the primary livelihood strategy for most educated youth.

Employment Challenges

Formal sector employment is extremely limited relative to youth population. Land scarcity eliminates agricultural pursuits for most. Entrepreneurship offers limited opportunities without capital. Informal employment including petty trading provides minimal income. Youth face overwhelming employment constraints.

Out-Migration Expectation

Out-migration to Nairobi and other urban centres is the expected trajectory for educated youth. Secondary and tertiary education is pursued with migration in mind. Rural livelihood expectations are minimal. Migration represents the primary opportunity pathway. Out-migration is so prevalent it defines youth expectations.

Education and Skills

Many youth have completed secondary education with expectations of urban employment. Vocational training provides alternative pathways though with variable market relevance. Skill mismatches between training and labour market needs persist. Higher education access remains limited for most youth.

Land Access

Youth cannot access sufficient land through inheritance. Land scarcity eliminates agricultural pursuits. Property ownership remains beyond reach for majority populations. This constrains household formation and wealth accumulation. Youth despair regarding landlessness contributes to out-migration.

Social Challenges

Substance abuse is prevalent among youth given limited opportunity. Youth crime participation reflects desperation. Early pregnancy among young women reflects inadequate sexual education and economic constraints. Mental health challenges including depression emerge from constrained opportunity.

Youth Organizations

Youth groups and sports associations provide social engagement. Political participation is evident in electoral contests. Youth entrepreneurship initiatives attempt to create opportunities. Government youth development programmes provide very limited support. These initiatives reach only small youth proportions.
