Migori County is located in southwestern Kenya, bordering both Tanzania and Lake Victoria. The county has an area of approximately 2,496 square kilometers and a population of approximately 1.2 million (2019 census). The county is administratively organized into nine sub-counties with Migori town serving as the county headquarters.

Migori County is notable for its geographic position as a border county and for the Migori Gold Belt, which has seen centuries of artisanal and small-scale gold mining. The county has a mixed ethnic population, predominantly Luo (South Nyanza), with Kuria, Suba, and other communities present. The county's position on both the Tanzania border and Lake Victoria shore provides it with unique geographic characteristics and economic opportunities.

The county faces development challenges including limited infrastructure, artisanal gold mining's environmental impacts, health service constraints, and economic diversification needs. The Migori Gold Belt has historically provided income to mining communities, though environmental degradation from mining operations remains significant.

Geography and Population

The county extends from the Lake Victoria shore to the Tanzania border, encompassing diverse geographic zones. Lake Victoria provides fishing opportunities, while interior areas depend on agriculture and mining. The county's border location creates unique trade and cultural dynamics.

Economy and Livelihoods

The economy is based on fishing (in lakeside communities), agriculture, artisanal gold mining, and sugarcane cultivation. Sony Sugar Company operates in the county, providing employment and income to surrounding farming communities. Livelihoods are diverse and geographically distributed.

Development Challenges

Infrastructure remains limited, with poor road networks constraining market access. Health service capacity is limited relative to population needs. Gold mining environmental degradation creates health and environmental challenges.
